In our interview, the 29-year-old Emirati shares his thoughts on writing with confidence and challenging your audience.

  • Who are your biggest writing influences?
Ralph Waldo Emerson, Khalil Gibran, and Leo Tolstoy.

  • What are your writing habits? Methodical and well organized or more spontaneous?
I plan each scene's dynamic before penning it down. I normally write in order, but plan ahead and make plenty of notes on a separate document.

  • What do you like to read in your spare time, and why?
I normally read non-fiction books about wisdom, relationships and psychology. Simply because one can never know oneself enough.

  • How difficult was it to get your work recognized when you were younger? How did you overcome this?
I wrote, wrote, and wrote until I felt I had something worthy of the public's attention. Then I wrote some more.

  • Do you have a practical tip for a young Emirati writer?
I think the American poet Robert Frost summed it up pretty well when he said "No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader." He means put your heart and soul into what you’re writing. If you’re not feeling the emotion as the writer, how can you expect your readers to experience it?

  • And a more general piece of advice for aspiring Emirati screenwriters?
Believe in yourself. If you don't believe in yourself, how do you expect others to? Self-confidence is a big part of your success. It's not just your material, it's also how you feel about yourself as a human being that will take you far. Believe every single thing that you write. And write for an intelligent audience. Raise questions in your story. Give them all the pieces, but let them fit the pieces together by themselves.
