From a distance it looks like just another of Abu Dhabi’s idyllic beaches.
But as you approach the white sand and clear water dotted with mangrove trees, it begins to look more like a landfill site.
Plastic bags, bottles, tin cans, chairs - even a car bumper – are strewn over the 300m stretch of beach between Yas Island and Saadiyat Island. Plastic netting is twisted into the mangrove roots and cigarette butts float along the shore line.
